Cincinnati MD Resource Center Works to Increase Tristate’s Physician Supply
Greater Cincinnati reflects a national concern for a shortage of physicians that is expected to grow rapidly between now and 2020. The U.S. Bureau of Labor estimates the shortage will grow to be approximately 200,000 physicians. The aging population requiring more services is a key factor, but the nation’s doctors are aging too. In Greater Cincinnati, 42% of the physicians currently practicing in the area will have reached retirement age.
To address this pressing health care issue head-on, in August 2004 the Collaborative launched an initiative to address physician supply issues – the Cincinnati MD Resource Center and its associated Web site, cincinnatiMDjobs.com. The online service enables area physician employers to post physician job listings web site that is marketed to medical residents and practicing physicians, both regionally and nationally. The Cincinnati MD Resource Center provides staff to support the recruitment process by marketing to job-seeking physicians.
This approach for physician recruitment is unique. In fact, the Cincinnati MD Resource Center is the only initiative of its kind in any metropolitan area in the United States. And it’s one that is netting positive results. To date, the Cincinnati MD Resource Center has assisted in bringing more than 140 additional physicians to the Tristate. There are currently 129 open physician jobs on cincinnatiMDjobs.com
Additionally, Cincinnati MD Resource Center now advertises nationally for “hard-to-find” specialties and have placed ads in numerous electronic specialty newsletters distributed to residents and fellows throughout the country.
Retention is another priority. Currently, more than half of the candidates registered on cincinnatiMDjobs.com are practicing or training locally. In response to this, the Center hosts numerous networking events targeted toward physicians; as well as monthly physician employer roundtables that feature topics such as cultural competency, employer contract negotiations, and background checks.
